Sunglasses of the 1980s: Ray-Ban Aviator
Ray-Ban Aviator sunglasses were designed and produced during the 1950s when the United States realized that the resources of the world were infinite, and since they managed to win World War II single handedly, it was their right to have sunglasses that were three-times the size of the part of their body they were trying to protect: their upper-cheek.
Ray-Ban’s Aviator line of sunglasses soared (A-hah, hah!) to popularity in the 1980s due to the rampant celebrity worship and idolization that characterized the collective conscious of the decade. Characters could neither die nor become unpopular, such as Michael Jackson and Tom Cruise, wore Aviators in their various productions, and musical superstars such as Freddy Mercury, Roy Orbison, and even Buddy Holly, Ritchie Valens, and the Big Bopper could be seen making this blazing fireball of a fashion statement.
With a desire to be or at least look like what they had seen on television, the public went in droves to their nearest Ray-Ban Aviator outlets and secured a few dozen pairs each.
Sporting Aviators eventually became a good means to gauge whether or not one should spend time with a person. If someone didn’t have these glasses, then they were clearly squares and would likely NARC on your fun-time stash. These fantastic glasses also lent themselves to defining other sorts of characters. See the image on the left for a comprehensive listing.
Not only a symbol of being an all around cool dude, Aviators also have a reflective, mirror-like surface, that prevents the abyss from staring back into wearers when they make the decision to stare into the abyss.
Despite being called Aviators, this name is a misnomer. Wearing these glasses does not qualify one to pilot a plane. And even if they did, Aviators do not lend themselves to the act of aviation, as the lenses cancel out light reflecting from other planes as well as the lights of the dashboard.
Wearing Aviators does qualify individuals for a number of things, however. These qualifications include
- Being called a child molester
- Molesting children
Hats off to the Ray-Ban Aviator model of sunglasses. May your success allow the abyss to stare into itself for many more decades to come!
